1080p or 1440p for a gaming monitor? Consider the whole setup
1440p is sharper on paper, but a good choice depends on the combination of screen size, computer performance and target refresh rate.

What does resolution change?
1920 × 1080 and 2560 × 1440 describe the image's pixel dimensions. At the same screen size, higher resolution can make text and detail sharper, but also demands more graphics performance in games. Resolution does not describe motion clarity, colour or brightness.
Refresh rate and frame rate are different numbers
Microsoft defines refresh rate as the number of display updates per second. A 144 Hz monitor can refresh 144 times per second, but a game does not automatically produce that many new frames. Check your games' actual performance on your current computer.
Size, viewing distance and scaling
A larger screen does not by itself mean a better image. The same resolution spreads across a larger area. Consider desk depth and the space needed for the stand too. Windows scaling can enlarge text, but applications may handle it differently.
Connections determine the supported combination
Check which HDMI or DisplayPort connection supports the selected resolution and refresh rate. Not every port on a device necessarily supports the same combination. On a laptop, also check which graphics processor the external port connects to.
A decision in four steps
- Choose the screen size and measure your desk.
- Check performance in your own games.
- Choose your target refresh rate.
- Confirm cable and port support at full resolution.
