DDR4 or DDR5? Your motherboard decides the first choice

Memory generations are not interchangeable. How to avoid buying the wrong RAM.

Published 1 October 2026 · Source-based comparison

QUICK ANSWER

If you are upgrading an existing computer, buy the memory generation its motherboard supports. Moving to DDR5 may require more than a new memory kit.

Product specifications are manufacturer claims. Figures in standards comparisons are not measured real-world results. Conclusions depend on how you use the device.

Check the full motherboard model name

A motherboard range may include versions for different memory types. The processor name alone is not enough. Check the motherboard manual for the memory generation, permitted capacity and recommended slot population.

Do not compare megatransfers alone

Speed, latency, capacity and the memory controller work together. We do not promise a particular FPS improvement here: that would require measured results from the same computer and game. First identify whether your current memory is a bottleneck at all.

Budget for the whole upgrade

If changing memory generation also requires a motherboard and processor, compare the cost of the whole basket. Adding more memory of the same generation to a working computer may be more practical than changing platform just for a newer number.

Three checks before buying

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model and memory generation.
  2. Confirm the DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor.
  3. Check the memory slots and maximum capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Can DDR4 and DDR5 be mixed?

Not in a normal shared memory configuration; they are not mutually compatible.

Will a fast kit always run at the speed on the box?

Not necessarily. The platform, settings and memory profiles affect the speed achieved.
