Ethernet or Wi-Fi for gaming? Test connection stability
A speed-test number alone does not describe a gaming connection. Compare cable and Wi-Fi in your own home.
Published 1 October 2026 · Source-based comparison
If a cable is easy to run, Ethernet is a useful baseline for investigating gaming connection problems. You do not need to replace a working Wi-Fi connection on principle.
Editorial assessment, not our own product test.Differences side by side
| Comparison point | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Network cable to a router or switch | Wireless connection to an access point |
| Installation | Requires a cable route | More flexible placement |
| Typical things to check | Ports, cable and switch | Distance, interference and signal |
| Metric | Latency and packet loss | Latency and packet loss |

Compare using the same game and server
Try cable and Wi-Fi at the same time of day. Watch latency variation and dropouts, not just download speed. If both have problems, the cause may be your internet service, router or game server.
Identify any wireless link in the chain
If your gaming computer connects by cable to a wireless mesh node, the entire path to the internet may not be wired. Check the node's backhaul. Otherwise, your cable-versus-Wi-Fi comparison may lead to the wrong conclusion.
Buy only after identifying the problem
An expensive gaming router will not automatically improve the connection. Try computer placement, drivers and a direct cable. Keep downloads and cloud backups consistent during tests so the comparison is meaningful.
Three checks before buying
- Test the same game with the same setup.
- Check the mesh node's backhaul too.
- Record latency variation and dropouts.
Frequently asked questions
Will a cable always reduce ping to a specific figure?
No. The external route and game server affect latency.
Is good download speed enough?
Not alone. Stability and packet loss also matter for gaming.
