HOME GYM PURCHASE PLAN
Home gym starter budget: what to buy, and in what order?
Build your home gym around the exercises you actually do and the space available. Buying gradually helps you avoid unnecessary purchases.

First, plan the space and exercises
Measure the clear floor space and allow for surrounding furniture. Storage space is different from the space needed to use equipment safely. Decide whether you mainly want strength training, mobility work or both. Write down a few exercises you intend to do weekly before choosing an equipment category.
Floor protection can be sensible if the surface is slippery or easily damaged. Make sure you can use equipment without hitting walls, lights or other people.
The smallest start: bodyweight and bands
If your budget or space is tight, start without a large machine. Resistance bands take little storage space and can supplement many exercises. Their resistance changes as they stretch, so figures from different manufacturers should not be treated as directly comparable weights in kilograms.
Check a band's condition regularly, and only use an anchor point if it can withstand the pull. If you want to track resistance more precisely, dumbbells can be a clearer next step.
Next purchase: adjustable resistance
Adjustable dumbbells let you increase resistance without owning many separate pairs. Before buying, check the weight range, adjustment increments, locking mechanism and whether you are buying one dumbbell or two. Compare storage dimensions too.
One kettlebell works well for some exercises, but you cannot easily make the same weight lighter for shoulder work and heavier for leg work. For many people it is therefore an addition, although for others it may be the first purchase.
When do you need a bench or a larger machine?
Buy a bench only if your planned exercises really need it and you have room to use it. Check the manufacturer's load rating, stability and storage position. A large machine is a poor purchase if you cannot place it where it can be used safely.
The buying order is: prepare the exercise space, choose equipment for several movements, add resistance, then consider specialist equipment. This guide does not fix prices, because they vary by retailer and over time.
