Choosing a mechanical keyboard without switch-colour confusion

A switch colour is not a universal quality rating. Start by choosing the size, layout and whether you want a smooth, tactile or clicky keystroke.

Our editorial approach: this guide draws on information from standards organisations, manufacturers and the operating system provider. We do not claim to have tested these products ourselves.

Choose the size before the switch

A full-size keyboard includes a number pad. TKL removes it but usually keeps separate arrow and function keys. Smaller 75% and 65% models save desk space, but some functions move to key combinations. Check the image for the keys you need.

Three common switch feels

FeelWhat it is likeWhat to check
LinearSmooth travel without a distinct tactile bump.Actuation force and accidental presses.
TactileA noticeable bump during the keystroke, around the actuation point. The strength of the bump and the sound.
ClickyA distinct click as well as tactile feedback.Whether the sound suits your workspace and other people at home.

CHERRY describes the keycap moving with the mechanism in a mechanical switch. However, manufacturers' colours do not always mean the same feel, so compare the switch name, force and travel rather than colour alone.

Finnish layout and key legends

If you need Ä and Ö in their familiar positions, check for a Nordic or FI/SE layout. ISO and ANSI layouts differ in Enter-key shape and some key positions. The product image may show an international version, so check the retailer's exact product number.

Hot-swap, wireless and software

Hot-swap can let you replace switches without soldering, but compatible switch types vary. For a wireless keyboard, check for a receiver as well as Bluetooth, the charging method and whether settings remain available without the software.

Five questions for the buyer

  1. Do I need a number pad?
  2. Is the layout Nordic ISO?
  3. How much noise is acceptable in the room?
  4. Do I need wireless or hot-swap?
  5. Does the software support my operating system?
