Choosing a gaming headset: connection, microphone and comfort

A good gaming headset is more than a pair of drivers on a headband. Start with the connection and device compatibility, then consider comfort and the microphone.

Choose a connection your gaming device supports

A 3.5 mm cable is straightforward, but microphone support depends on the device's audio socket and the cable. USB headsets may include their own audio hardware. In wireless models, a 2.4 GHz USB receiver and Bluetooth are different connection types: check which connections your console, computer or phone supports.

If you regularly switch between a PC, console and phone, list your devices before buying. Also check whether the headset can connect to two devices at once, or whether 'multiplatform' simply means that you can switch connection types.

Choose wired ifyou want a straightforward connection and do not need freedom to move around.
Choose wireless ifyour device has a compatible port for the receiver and you are comfortable keeping the headset charged.

Bluetooth alone does not tell you the latency

The Bluetooth version number alone does not guarantee a particular level of gaming latency. The audio device, source device and audio profile must work together. Bluetooth SIG explains that LE Audio uses the LC3 codec and supports new multistream features, but a feature name on the box is no substitute for checking compatibility with your specific devices.

Comfort matters over a long gaming session

Weight is only one factor. Headband pressure, pad size, glasses, earcup depth and heat build-up all affect comfort. A suitable returns policy is therefore valuable. Replaceable earpads and cables can make a headset easier to maintain.

A practical microphone checklist

Before ordering

  1. List the devices you will use.
  2. Choose a connection for each device.
  3. Check microphone support and mute controls.
  4. Compare weight, earpads and replacement parts.
  5. Read the returns and warranty terms.
