Samsung T7 or T9? Check your USB port before buying

The difference between the T7 and T9 also depends on your computer's USB connection. Compare these external SSDs side by side.

QUICK ANSWER

The T9's extra speed makes sense if the entire connection supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. If your computer only supports 10 Gbit/s, compare price and capacity before paying for the faster model.

The shape of USB-C does not promise a speed

Identical-looking USB-C connectors can offer different transfer speeds. Check the computer's port standard in its specifications. Do not infer Gen 2x2 support from a Thunderbolt label: that particular USB mode must be confirmed separately.

Peak speed and your work are different things

The manufacturer's peak figure is a maximum for sequential transfers. Small files, source-drive speed and temperature can limit transfers. The T9 does not automatically halve every copy time.

Back up an external drive too

If a file exists only on an external SSD, it is your only copy. Keep another copy of important photos and documents elsewhere. Also check that you can restore an individual file from the backup.

Three checks before buying

  1. Note your computer port's exact USB standard.
  2. Use a cable rated for sufficient data speed.
  3. Compare models of the same capacity and their total cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is any USB-C cable enough?

Not necessarily. Check the cable's data-transfer support separately.

Is the T9 always twice as fast?

No. The difference between maximum figures does not promise a particular real-world transfer time.
