SSD buying guide: compatibility before speed
The biggest mistake when planning an SSD upgrade is buying on speed figures or an M.2 label alone. First ask whether the drive is compatible with your particular device.

Find the exact computer model
Check the laptop model number or desktop motherboard model. The manufacturer's service manual or compatibility list tells you whether there is a free slot and which drives it supports. Check physical limits too, such as allowed M.2 card length and room for a heatsink.
M.2 is a form factor; SATA and NVMe use different interfaces
M.2 describes the card's shape. Similar-looking M.2 drives can use different connections, so fitting physically does not guarantee operation. Check the motherboard or device manual for SATA, PCIe/NVMe or dual support. Do not judge compatibility by the connector's appearance.
Choose capacity for your usage
First check how much of your current drive is used. Consider large games, photos or videos and how quickly your collection grows. Leave working space for future installations and updates. When comparing two drives of the same size, consider warranty conditions and the manufacturer's endurance ratings as well as price.
Peak speed does not decide every use case
Sequential read speed on a product page is one measurement. Your experience also depends on the task, the rest of the computer and whether the slot supports the advertised performance. For an older computer, a compatible drive with enough capacity is often a more useful starting point than chasing the highest number.
Before installation
Back up important files before replacing a drive. Decide beforehand whether to reinstall the operating system or migrate the old one. Check whether you need accessories such as a mounting screw or an enclosure for the old drive. Also check conditions relating to opening the device and its warranty.
