Choosing a USB-C dock: the connector does not tell you everything
USB-C describes the connector's shape. Identical-looking ports or cables may support very different charging, data and display capabilities.

List the functions you need first
List the number and resolution of displays, keyboard, mouse, network cable, memory card and external drives. Then compare docks. An extra port is no use if it does not support the speed or display mode you need.
Display support depends on the whole chain
The computer's USB-C port must support video, the dock must handle it and the cable must meet the required specification. Check resolution and refresh rate separately for one display and multiple displays. Operating system support can differ.
Charging power is not the same as the power supply's rating
Some of the dock's power supply output may be used by the dock and connected devices. Check the manufacturer's stated power delivery to the computer. If the laptop needs more than the dock supplies, charging may be slow or the battery may drain during heavy use.
USB-C cables are not all alike
USB-IF guidance specifies data-transfer and power capabilities separately for USB-C products. A reversible connector does not guarantee fast data or high charging power. Use the cable supplied with the dock or a clearly labelled, technically equivalent cable.
Ethernet, audio and removable drives
If the dock includes Ethernet, check the port's rated speed. Its audio connection may appear as a separate audio device in the operating system. Safely eject external drives before disconnecting the dock cable.
Dock buying checklist
- Exact computer model and USB-C port capabilities.
- Number of displays, resolution and refresh rate.
- Charging power the laptop needs.
- Required data, network and card ports.
- Operating system and cable compatibility.
