Wi-Fi 7 or Ethernet? A new standard or a working cable
A comparison of Wi-Fi 7 and wired connections for home use, without speed promises.
Published 1 October 2026 · Source-based comparison
Wi-Fi 7 is worth considering for devices that need wireless connectivity. A working Ethernet connection does not need replacing just because a new standard exists.
Editorial assessment, not our own product test.Differences side by side
| Comparison point | Wi-Fi 7 | Ethernet |
|---|---|---|
| The complete connection chain | Router, client device and radio environment | Ports, switch and cable |
| Flexibility | Mobile devices | A fixed cable route |
| Speed | Depends on the setup and radio link | Depends on port speeds and the connection chain |
| Test | Latency, variation and transfers in your own home | Latency, variation and transfers in your own home |
Product specifications are manufacturer claims. Figures in standards comparisons are not measured real-world results. Conclusions depend on how you use the device.
Ethernet does not mean just one speed
1 Gbit/s, 2.5 Gbit/s and faster networks are different setups. Check the ports on your router, switch and computer. Do not compare a fast Wi-Fi setup's peak figure with every wired network.
Wi-Fi 7 needs a compatible client device
Some features depend on the device, drivers and software. Replacing the router does not give an older wireless adapter every Wi-Fi 7 feature. Check the particular features you are paying for.
Choose according to the problem
Wireless has value if you need mobility. If your computer stays on the same desk and the cable works, weigh the cost of a new router against the likely benefit. Changing your home-network standard does not increase the external speed of your internet service.
Three checks before buying
- List the full connection chain for both options.
- Confirm your computer's wireless adapter features.
- Measure where you use the device, not just beside the router.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wi-Fi 7 always faster than Ethernet?
No. Both depend on their implementation and setup.
Do I need a new router if the cable works?
This comparison does not automatically justify one. Identify the need before buying.
